Palantir (PLTR) Stock Skyrockets: How Government Contracts and AI Power Its $430 Billion Rise

Palantir (PLTR) stock has skyrocketed since it went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020, jumping over 1,700% in less than five years. The Denver-based company, famous for its AI-powered software, has reached record valuations, even surpassing some of the biggest tech giants despite having much lower revenue.

Recently, Palantir reported second-quarter revenue of over $1 billion, which pushed its market value above $430 billion. This rapid growth has been fueled by its strong government contracts and the fast adoption of AI technology.

Retail investors have played a big role in this rise. According to Goldman Sachs, they invested $1.2 billion into Palantir just last month, showing strong confidence from everyday traders.

A big reason for Palantir’s success is its close relationship with the U.S. government. Last quarter, revenue from U.S. government contracts rose 53% to $426 million, making up 55% of total revenue. Its U.S. commercial business grew even faster, up 93% year-over-year, showing strong demand outside government work too.

The company’s partnership with the U.S. military is one of its most important assets. Recently, Palantir won a huge 10-year, $10 billion deal with the Department of Defense, which combined 75 older contracts into one. Earlier this year, it also received a $795 million boost for its AI-powered battlefield technology. These contracts prove Palantir’s key role in national security, providing advanced data and AI solutions.

Most of Palantir’s revenue comes from the U.S., making up about 75% of total sales. While international commercial revenue fell slightly by 3% last quarter, U.S. sales have grown nearly five times in the last five years—from $156 million to around $733 million.

Overseas revenue also grew, but more slowly, doubling from $133 million to $271 million in the same period.

Investors are paying a very high price for Palantir’s stock because of the excitement around AI. Its market value puts it among the most expensive stocks in the S&P 500, with a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio above 280—much higher than Apple or Microsoft, both around 30. Even compared to AI giants like Nvidia and Tesla, Palantir’s valuation is still very high, which means there’s strong growth potential but also higher risk.

Palantir’s success comes from a mix of strong government ties, cutting-edge AI work, and loyal retail investors. PLTR CEO Alex Karp has highlighted the company’s long-term potential despite criticism about its high valuation. While the price may seem expensive, Palantir’s position in both the AI and defense industries makes it a unique and powerful player in the tech world.
